Brand Safety

Brand safety is the set of controls that keep ads from appearing next to content, placements, or contexts that would damage the brand, including content exclusions, placement exclusions, and inventory type settings.

In practice

Search ads appear on a results page; Display, YouTube, Discover, and PMax ads appear on other people's content, and not all of it is where a brand wants to be seen. Brand safety controls limit that exposure. Google offers inventory types (expanded, standard, limited) that filter sensitive content, content label exclusions for categories like tragedy or profanity, and placement exclusions for specific sites, apps, and channels. Meta offers inventory filters and block lists.

Placement reports are the working tool. Review where Display, video, and PMax budget actually went, exclude what does not fit, and keep a shared exclusion list that grows with every account. Mobile app placements and made-for-kids YouTube channels are frequent offenders for both safety and performance.

Brand safety and performance usually point the same way: the placements that embarrass a brand rarely convert either.

Why it matters

Automated campaigns will serve wherever the algorithm finds cheap attention unless told where not to.
