Customer Match

Customer Match is a Google Ads feature that lets you upload hashed first-party customer data (emails, phone numbers, addresses) to build audiences for targeting, exclusion, bid adjustment, and as signals for automated campaigns.

In practice

Customer Match is Google's version of a customer list audience. Upload a list, Google hashes and matches it against signed-in users, and the resulting audience can be targeted in Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, and Demand Gen, used as an audience signal in Performance Max, or excluded from acquisition campaigns.

Uses that pay off: bid up on existing customers searching category terms, exclude current customers from prospecting to keep budget on new buyers, seed similar segments and PMax signals with your best purchasers, and run win-back campaigns to lapsed customers. Lists can be uploaded manually, through a CRM integration, or automatically from platforms like Shopify.

Match rates depend on data quality; formatted, lowercase emails with phone numbers as a second identifier match best. Google requires policy compliance on how the data was collected and applies membership duration limits, so lists need refreshing.

Why it matters

It turns your customer database into targeting, exclusion, and algorithm signal across every Google campaign type.
