Meta Ads

Custom Audiences

Custom audiences are Meta targeting segments built from your own data, including customer lists, website visitors, app users, video viewers, and people who engaged with your Page or Instagram profile.

In practice

Custom audiences are the raw material for remarketing, exclusions, and lookalike seeds on Meta. Website custom audiences come from pixel and CAPI events, so they inherit whatever tracking gaps you have. Customer list audiences are uploaded, hashed, and matched to Meta accounts; match rates depend on how complete the email and phone data is. Engagement audiences are built from video views, lead form opens, and profile interactions and require no tracking at all.

The practical uses: exclude existing customers from prospecting so budget finds new buyers, sequence remarketing by how far someone got (viewed product, added to cart, initiated checkout), and seed lookalikes from the highest-value segment.

Naming and retention windows matter. A 180-day website audience and a 7-day cart abandoner audience are different tools, and a shared account with fifty unnamed audiences is unmanageable.

Why it matters

They are how first-party data becomes targeting and exclusion on Meta.
