Measurement & Tracking

Conversion Action

A conversion action is a defined event in Google Ads (purchase, form submission, call, sign-up) that the account counts as a valuable outcome and that Smart Bidding optimizes toward when set as primary.

In practice

Everything in a Google Ads account flows from the conversion actions. They decide what the reports count, what the algorithm chases, and what a target CPA or ROAS is measured against. Each action has a source (website tag, Google Analytics, calls, imports), a counting method (one per click or every), a conversion window, an optional value, and a primary or secondary designation.

Primary actions feed bidding; secondary actions are observed only. The most common configuration errors we find are page-view events set as primary, both a GA4 purchase and a Google Ads purchase tag counted as primary (double counting), and calls under a meaningful duration counted alongside real inquiries.

Before launching or taking over an account we define the conversion set on paper: which events matter, what each is worth, and which are primary. Then we test every one with a real submission. Custom conversion goals let a campaign optimize toward a subset of actions when the account mixes lead types.

Why it matters

It is the definition of success the entire account optimizes toward; get it wrong and every other metric lies.
