Measurement & Tracking

Google Tag Manager (GTM)

Google Tag Manager is a free tag management system that deploys and controls marketing and analytics tags on a website from a single container without editing site code for each change.

In practice

GTM is where conversion tracking lives. Instead of pasting a Google Ads snippet, a Meta pixel, a Microsoft UET tag, and a call tracking script into the site separately, each becomes a tag in the container, fired by triggers (page loads, form submissions, button clicks, data layer events) and parameterized by variables. Changes are versioned and previewed before publishing.

A clean container has naming conventions, a documented data layer for purchase and lead events, and one tag per platform per event. The containers we inherit often have duplicated tags from successive agencies, triggers that fire on every page instead of the thank-you page, and pixels from platforms the client stopped using years ago. Duplicate tags are the most common cause of inflated conversion counts.

GTM also supports server-side tagging, which routes tags through a server you control for better durability against browser restrictions.

Why it matters

Nearly every conversion in a modern account passes through it; its hygiene is the hygiene of your data.
