The Client
Whiskey Caviar is an online liquor store with a shop in Cardiff, California, that ships rare and premium spirits nationwide from a Shopify storefront. Its 5,000+ product catalog runs deep on hard-to-find bottles: allocated bourbon like Pappy Van Winkle, Blanton's, W. L. Weller and Colonel E.H. Taylor, premium tequila like Clase Azul and Don Julio 1942, collectible limited editions, bundles and gift sets.
Whiskey Caviar came to us in January 2025 on a referral from The Barrel Tap, one of our longest-running liquor clients. In 2024, under previous management, its ads brought in $4.45 million.
"$4.45 million in 2024. $10.17 million in our first year. $8.95 million in the first nine months of 2026."
The Starting Point
The account was built around a single catch-all Performance Max campaign:
- One campaign for everything. Every category, price point and audience shared one budget, with no way to push the bottles that were selling.
- No deliberate Search. High-intent searches like "buy bourbon online," brand searches and category searches weren't being captured on purpose.
- No brand defense. Competitors could bid on the store's own name with nothing protecting it.
- Loose feed and tracking. Smart Bidding was optimizing on noisy signals instead of real purchase value.
The Growth, Year by Year
- 2024, before us: $4.45M in revenue from ads
- 2025, our first year: $10.17M, 2.3 times the year before
- 2026 so far: $8.95M from January to September, 120% ahead of the same nine months of 2025
Every Month Beats the Same Month Before Us
Online liquor is a holiday business, so the fairest comparison is month against month. Here is March through December for the year before us, our first year and this year:
- December 2024, before us: $1.03M
- December 2025: $4.15M, four times higher
- 2026: about $1 million every month from April to September. Before us, those months brought in about $300K each.
$18.9 Million in 20 Months
Added up since we took over, our Google Ads and Microsoft Ads have produced $18.9 million in revenue for Whiskey Caviar:
That's $2.49M in ad spend returning $18.9M in revenue, a 7.6x return on ad spend. Efficiency rose as the account scaled: 5.5x in 2024 before us, 7.1x in 2025 and 8.2x so far in 2026.
What We Built
1. A Full Account Architecture Rebuild
We replaced the single catch-all campaign with a deliberate structure. That meant category Performance Max campaigns for whiskey, tequila, under-$100 bottles and a top-of-funnel discovery campaign, next to dedicated Shopping, including a Blanton's campaign. Each has its own budget and bidding, so spend flows to the product lines that return the most.
2. Search Expansion and Brand Defense
We launched Search for brand terms, category terms and "buy online" intent, with a separate tequila campaign. Exact and broad match run side by side as A/B tests to find the cheapest path to each sale. A library of 2,000+ negative keywords cuts wasted spend.
3. Feed and Conversion-Tracking Discipline
We tightened the product feed and rebuilt conversion tracking around true purchase value. That way Smart Bidding optimizes toward revenue, not clicks. This is what makes aggressive scaling safe.
4. Microsoft Ads as a Second Engine
We launched Microsoft Ads in our first weeks on the account. It added $1.38 million in revenue by the end of September 2026.
5. Daily Optimization via Ad Campaign Concierge™
Every campaign gets daily attention through our proprietary Ad Campaign Concierge™ system: search-term mining, bid and budget moves, product-level performance checks and continuous target-ROAS tuning.
Google Ads Became the Store's #1 Channel
We measure success against the whole business, not just the ad platform. From January 2025 to June 2026, Whiskey Caviar did $16.4M in total store sales. Google Ads drove 58% of it, with Performance Max alone the single largest channel, ahead of Direct, Email and Paid Social.
What Sold
The growth ran on rare, allocated and high-ticket spirits, the inventory that's hardest to advertise profitably and most rewarding when you get it right.
Key Takeaways
- One catch-all Performance Max campaign leaves money on the table. Splitting by category and price point, with real Search and Shopping next to it, is what unlocks control over budget and growth.
- You can scale spend and improve efficiency at the same time. Revenue more than doubled while return on ad spend went up, because the scaling followed the data.
- Tracking is the foundation. Smart Bidding is only as smart as the purchase data it gets.
- The fourth quarter makes the year. A structure that's ready before October turned a $1M December into a $4M December.
