The Client
The Studio Pod is a professional headshot studio in Houston, Texas. We rebuilt their Google Ads, which produced 1,700+ booking requests in under ten months and cut the cost per conversion from over $1,700 to about $24.
A headshot is a quick, local purchase. Professionals, job seekers and teams search for a studio when they need a photo this week, and they book the one whose ad answers first and looks right.
"4 conversions in the three months before us. 380+ booking requests in September 2023 alone."
The Challenge
Google Ads for photography studios has its own traps:
- Broad, cheap-looking searches. "Photographer" and "photo studio" bring wedding shoppers, students and people looking for free photos.
- A local market. Only searchers within reach of the Houston studio are worth a click.
- Bookings the ad account can't see. Sessions are booked on a third-party platform, so Google Ads never sees the booking itself.
- Expensive conversions. In the three months before us the account spent over $7,000 and recorded 4 conversions, over $1,700 each.
What We Built
1. A Trackable Booking Signal
Because the bookings happen on an outside platform, we set the Book Now click, the hand-off to the booking platform, as the account's main conversion, alongside calls from the ads and form submissions. For the first time the campaigns could optimize toward people trying to book.
2. Consumer Search Campaigns Built Around Headshots
We built two consumer Search campaigns and a supplemental campaign on Maximize Conversions, organized around the searches that book: "headshots houston", "professional headshots near me", "business head shot" and the studio's own name.
3. Houston-Only Targeting
Every campaign targets Houston and its ZIP codes, so the budget only reaches people who can get to the studio.
4. Negatives on Every Campaign
More than 200 campaign-level negative keywords across our campaigns cut wedding, school-photo, DIY and job searches before they could spend.
5. Head-to-Head Tests and a Performance Max Campaign
We rebuilt the account's inherited lead campaign to our standard and tested it against the original with Google's campaign experiments. In January 2024 we added Performance Max to test reach beyond Search.
6. Daily Optimization via Ad Campaign Concierge™
Every campaign was reviewed daily through our proprietary Ad Campaign Concierge™ system: search-term mining, new negatives, budget shifts toward the campaigns producing bookings, and A/B tests of bidding and ad copy.
The Results
- 1,700+ booking requests (clicks to the booking platform) plus 60+ phone calls and form submissions in under ten months.
- Cost per conversion: from over $1,700 before us to about $24 across the engagement.
- Best stretch: September to December 2023, at about $16 per conversion.
- Peak month: 380+ booking requests in September 2023, from an account that had produced 4 conversions in the three months before us.
Key Takeaways
- Track what you can see. When bookings happen off-site, the click to the booking platform is the signal that teaches the campaigns who books.
- Local intent beats volume. "Headshots houston" brings buyers; "photographer" brings browsers.
- Negatives are the work. Over 200 of them kept a small market's budget on headshot searches.
- Test before you replace. Running the old and new campaigns side by side showed which structure performed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a booking cost for a headshot studio on Google Ads?
Before we took over, The Studio Pod paid over $1,700 for each conversion: 4 calls and form fills in three months. During our engagement, over $43K in ad spend produced 1,700+ booking requests plus 60+ calls and forms, about $24 each. From September to December 2023 the cost was about $16.
How do you track bookings that happen on a third-party booking platform?
You track the hand-off. The Studio Pod's bookings are completed on an outside booking platform that can't report back to Google Ads, so the click that sends a visitor to that platform is the booking signal the campaigns optimize toward, alongside phone calls and forms.
What searches bring headshot clients?
Local, specific ones. The searches that converted most often were the studio's own name, 'headshots houston', 'professional headshots houston' and 'headshots near me'.
About This Campaign
Professional headshot lead generation on Google Ads, built with our proprietary Ad Campaign Concierge™ optimization system.
Industry: Photography (Professional Headshot Studio) Platforms: Google Ads (Search, Performance Max) Location: Houston, Texas Account Duration: June 2023 to April 2024. The engagement has ended.
Conversions are booking requests, phone calls from the ads and contact or lead-form submissions recorded in Google Ads. The Studio Pod's bookings are completed on a third-party booking platform that cannot be tracked in Google Ads, so a booking request is a click on the Book Now button that sends the visitor to that platform; it is the account's official booking conversion. Google Analytics duplicates of these actions are excluded. Before us, the account had no booking tracking, and its 4 conversions from March to May 2023 were calls and forms. Results are limited to our engagement, June 2023 to April 2024; the campaigns kept running after we left, and those months are not counted. All amounts are in US dollars and rounded down.
